Backyard Royalty: The Vibrant Blue Jays of Central Pennsylvania
There is nothing quite like looking out the window and seeing a sudden flash of brilliant blue against the green grass. Lately, my backyard feeders have been a bustling hub of activity, thanks to a couple of incredibly stunning regular guests.
If you have been following my wildlife photography journey, you know how much I love capturing the vibrant bird species native to our area. But these past few weeks, a specific pair of Blue Jays has completely stolen the spotlight.
The Allure of Black Oil Sunflower Seeds
If you want to draw a crowd of these intelligent, striking birds to your yard, I have one word for you: black oil sunflower seeds.
These two show up all the time, practically on a schedule, just to clear out the feeders. They are bold, full of personality, and highly tactical when it comes to grabbing their favorite treats. Watching them touch down in the grass to scout the area or plan their next raid on the feeder has become a favorite daily ritual.
Capturing the Dynamic Duo
I managed to catch a few beautiful moments of our frequent flyers on camera recently:
Double the Trouble (and Beauty): In Image One, you can see both of these beautiful backyard regulars exploring the grass near the base of the trees. The contrast of their intricate blue, white, and black feathers against the bright green backdrop really highlights just how magnificent these birds are.
A Closer Look: In Image Two, one of the jays paused just long enough for a sharp profile shot. The detail on its crest and the subtle textures of its plumage show off the incredible natural patterns that make Blue Jays an absolute joy to photograph.
Bringing the Wild Indoors
Whether they are sounding the alarm for other birds or fiercely defending their stash of sunflower seeds, these jays bring an undeniable energy to the yard. Documenting them reminds me why local wildlife photography is so rewarding, you don’t have to travel far to see something spectacular.
