Welcome back to the second and final installment of my backyard transformation! If you missed Part 1, we laid the groundwork, but today is all about the "heavy lifting"—getting that stubborn stump out of the way and prepping for some new life.
The Great Stump Struggle
Let’s talk about the stump. It was a bit of a situation, to say the least. I started out with the basics—a hatchet and some hand trowels to dig around the root system. While the hatchet is a classic for a reason, it quickly became clear that it wasn't going to cut it (literally) for this job.
To really get things moving, I upgraded to a reciprocal saw. This was a total game-changer. The power and precision of the saw allowed me to slice through the thicker roots that were anchoring the stump deep in the ground. After some persistent work, that stump was finally history!
From Bare Dirt to New Growth
With the stump removed, it was time to clean up and prep the soil:
Raking and Clearing: I cleared out the debris and raked the area smooth.
Defining the Space: I installed a flexible, pound-in border to give the bed a clean, professional look.
Soil and Mulch: I used 10 bags of Scotts Topsoiland a few bags of Cedar Mulch Blend to fill in the gaps and create a healthy environment for planting.
Planting for the Future
The final step was the most rewarding—seeding! I used a combination of:
Hummingbird and Butterfly Mix
Wildflower Seeds
I’m hoping to attract some beautiful local wildlife soon. Stay tuned for updates once these flowers start to bloom—I’m looking forward to getting some great shots of our winged visitors!
