Did you know the European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is in North America because of a literary obsession? In 1890, Eugene Schieffelin released 60 starlings in NYCās Central Park, determined to introduce every bird mentioned in William Shakespeareās plays.
From those 60 birds, the population exploded to over 200 million across the continent.

Why they are Evolutionary Rockstars:
* The "Prying" Technique: As seen in these photos, that sharp yellow beak is a specialized tool. Starlings use "open-billed probing," using strong muscles to force their beak open underground to find larvae others can't reach.
* Masters of Mimicry: They don't just sing; they remix. They can mimic everything from Red-tailed Hawks to car alarms and even human speech.
* Aerial Architects: They create murmurations, those massive, swirling clouds in the sky used to confuse predators through collective motion.

The Bittersweet Reality:
While their iridescent, "star-speckled" plumage is stunning, they are one of the most successful invasive species in history, often outcompeting native cavity-nesters like Eastern Bluebirds for real estate.
Love them or loathe them, they are a permanent, shimmering part of our ecosystem!
